Minhaj al-‘Arifin is the shortest – and arguably most accessible – presentation of the holistic methodology of Imam Muhammad al-Ghazali in self-analysis and spiritual development. It is in effect a summary of his similarly named Minhaj al-‘Abidin – itself a summary of his magnum opus Ihya ‘Ulum al-Din – that is both accessible and concise in the framework it lays out for the novice as they seek to develop in spiritual maturity.
Covering topics as vast as self-reflection, the etiquette of purity and worship, and the spiritual ills that lead to the soul’s destruction, this work – like his other volumes – is not a mere academic presentation but a call to action and the attainment of higher realities. In an age of ever-increasing materialism and individualism, the central reminder of the author – that we are accountable to a God who created us for a higher purpose – is more relevant than ever.
